Kirk began flying with his father in a Beechcraft Bonanza at a young age, always flying in the right seat. Dr. Harmon was accepted to the Air Force Academy, but did not pass the vision standard for a pilot slot. He attended Purdue University instead, and earned his Medical Degree from Cornell Medical College, and completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine (adult specialist) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Harmon’s love of flying never lessened, and at the conclusion of his residency, he joined the Air National Guard, RF4 squadron, in Birmingham, Alabama. He was trained as a Flight Surgeon and became “Rated Air Crew” as a Flight Surgeon attending to the health and welfare of the squadron pilots.

Dr. Harmon and family moved to the Pacific Northwest decades ago, and has turned his attention to full time aviation medicine. He is well-connected to the medical community throughout the Pacific Northwest.

ABOUT FAA EXAMS
(CHOOSING YOUR AME)

Choosing your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) is a very important decision for a commercial pilot, and for aspiring commercial pilots. Early in a professional pilot's career, choosing an AME who can help navigate the unforeseen challenges ahead becomes an important component of the pilot's flight deck. For many of our pilots, proximity between home and the AME is not the primary decision factor. The crucial factor is the breadth of experience of the AME, and his training. While the average number of FAA exams done each year by an AME is 50, Dr. Harmon performs approximately 1,000 exams each year. He has been trained by the United States Air Force to care for pilots, has 100’s of hours in the cockpit, and has performed aviator exams for more than 25 years.

The thousands of exams completed over decades has given Dr. Harmon a breadth of experience in facilitating most issues faced by pilots throughout their careers. His work with pilots and the FAA has produced essential experience and trust between the FAA, pilots, and ALPA Medical/AMAS.

Dr. Harmon considers it a privilege to be part of your aviation medicine team. He recognizes that flying is your livelihood and will use his skill and expertise with the goal of maintaining your ability to fly.
